Miyu, a talented model and my guide for the evening, leads me through the bustling streets of Shinjuku City. She knows all the best spots to capture the true essence of Tokyo. As the sun was setting, we decided to venture out to a bridge that overlooks the city to shoot some portraits. The soft light that illuminates cities in Japan is truly mesmerizing. However, it was quite challenging to do a photo shoot here due to the constant stream of people passing by every five seconds. It was a hectic and stressful experience! If I were to do a portrait shoot in the city again, I would choose a more rural location with fewer people passing by.

What attracted me to reach out to Miyu for a collaborative portrait shoot is the fact that she is a vegan model living in Japan. I was curious to learn more about her story and why she chose to become a vegan in a country known for its meat consumption. She is actually the only Japanese vegan I know living in Tokyo, and it is quite rare to come across vegans in Japan due to the challenges of adopting a vegan lifestyle there.

As we walked through the crowded streets, we stumbled upon an aesthetic alleyway popular among tourists called Omoide Yokocho, which translates to Memory Lane. The timing was perfect, as the sun had just set and the lights of the small shops began to illuminate, preparing for the long night ahead. What I love about Omoide Yokocho is how its ambiance completely changes depending on the time of day and season. In the morning, when all the shops are closed, there is a serene emptiness that provides a great opportunity to capture photos without any people. During the afternoon, you have some people walking around the alleyways but you get that nice soft light. However, it is at night when Omoide Yokocho truly comes alive. The air is filled with the delicious smell of BBQ and the smoke from open flames, that engulfs the alleyways. Even though we visited during winter, the presence of autumn leaves hanging in the middle of the alley added a charming touch. In spring, these leaves are replaced with cherry blossoms, creating a completely different scene. Be sure to include Omoide Yokocho as a must-visit spot for your next photo session or dinner date when you're in Tokyo!

私がMiyuさんに連絡を取るきっかけとなったのは、彼女が一緒にポートレイトを取るのに協力してくれ、そして又彼女が日本で暮らすベジタリアンのモデルであるということです。彼女のストーリーや、肉消費が盛んな国でなぜベジタリアンになったのかについて、興味がありました。実際、東京で暮らす唯一の日本人ベジタリアンモデルであり、実際日本でベジタリアンのモデルに出会うことは非常に珍しいです。日本でベジタリアンのライフスタイルを取り入れることの難しさにより、ベジタリアンの人に出会うことは少ないのです。混雑した通りを歩いていると、観光客に人気のある「思い出横丁」という名前の趣のある路地に偶然出くわしました。タイミングはぴったりで、太陽が沈み、小さな店舗の灯りが点灯し、長い夜に備えていました。思い出横丁の魅力は、その雰囲気が一日の時間帯や季節によって完全に変わることです。朝、店が閉まっている時には、人のいない静けさがあり、人々のいない写真を撮る絶好の機会があります。午後になると、人々が路地を歩き回っていますが、美しいやわらかな光が差し込みます。しかし、思い出横丁が本当に活気づくのは夜です。美味しいバーベキューの香りと、路地を包み込む開放的な炎の煙が空気に満ちています。私たちは冬に訪れましたが、路地の真ん中に垂れ下がる秋の葉が魅力的なタッチを加えていました。春になると、これらの葉は桜の花で置き換えられ、まったく異なる光景が広がります。次回東京にいらっしゃる際には、必ず思い出横丁を写真撮影やディナーデートの必須スポットとしてお楽しみください！
