As a photographer, some opportunities only come once in a few years, and this dreamy engagement session at Fujikawaguchiko was one of them. I had the good fortune of befriending Reina during my trip to Japan last year. She graciously collaborated with us on several portrait and film shoots. Reina got engaged to her partner Kuno mid-last year while on a trip to Tbilisi, Georgia. We were able to schedule their engagement shoot, which was timely as they didn't have a professional photographer for Kuno's proposal. The timing was perfect, as my upcoming trip to Japan was set for autumn. The bright orange and red leaves provided the perfect backdrop for capturing their special moment.

How They Met

In June 2020, Kuno met Reina in Nagoya, introduced by his mentor who lived in Vancouver. His mentor had met Reina in Tulum, Mexico and thought they would make a good match. After their initial meeting, Kuno began to question Japan's capitalist structure and chose to live in Osaka without spending any money. During this time, Reina visited him with her friend from Mexico. A few weeks later, Kuno returned to Nagoya, accepting his friend's offer to live together. As Kuno was a designer and Reina owned a design company, he started assisting her with her business, and they eventually moved in together. Both being digital nomads, they began to travel and explore new places together. Over time, their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship. Two weeks into their relationship, they had a small ceremony at their home. The idea of marriage crossed their minds, leading Kuno to confess his feelings for Reina. However, she felt it was too soon and declined his proposition. Reina later told Kuno, "I want a proper proposal someday." Three months later, during a work trip to Tbilisi, Georgia, they rode horses to the summit of Mt. Kazbeki. At an altitude of 8,000 meters in the Caucasus Mountains, Kuno proposed to Reina under the starlit sky, amidst the roar of thunder.

The Engagement Session

I had the pleasure of photographing Reina and Kuno's engagement session over two days, and I'm thrilled with how the beautiful photos turned out. We began by waking up before sunrise and driving to Chureito Pagoda to catch the sun's rays striking the peak of Mt Fuji. Despite the light becoming harsh by the time the sun came out, we made the most of it. After taking some casual shots, we moved on to more intimate ones. One of my favorites was a black and white shot with Mt Fuji in focus and Reina and Kuno blurred in the foreground.

The next day, we rose early again for a sunrise at Lake Kawaguchiko. Unfortunately, we couldn't see Mt. Fuji due to the thick cloud cover. However, the cloudy weather provided pretty good lighting, and I managed to get some great shots of Reina and Kuno against various backdrops.

My favorite photos were of them standing in the middle of the Kochia burning bushes. The lighting was perfect, and their outfits' style and colors added to the photos' dreamy atmosphere. It felt like a Japanese drama coming to life. After we finished at this location, we headed to Momiji Corridor, famous for its Momiji trees, otherwise known as Japanese maple.

The vibrant orange and red leaves during autumn create a stunning sight. However, capturing couple portraits here was a challenge due to the number of people also taking photos. Despite this, I'm thrilled I got to photograph couple portraits with the autumn trees in Japan. Thank you, Reina and Kuno, for letting me capture such a special moment in your lives.

私が写真家として、数年に一度しか訪れない機会もある、そしてこの夢見るような富士河口湖でのエンゲージメントセッションもその一つでした。私は昨年日本へ旅行した際、麗奈という友人と幸運にも巡り合いました。彼女は私たちと何度もポートレート撮影やフィルム撮影で協力してくれました。怜奈は昨年中ごろ、ジョージアのトビリシで旅行中にパートナーの久野と婚約しました。そして私たちは彼らの婚約撮影のスケジュールを組むことが出来ました。これはタイムリーでした。なぜなら、久野のプロポーズにプロの写真家がいなかったからです。私の次の日本への旅行は秋に設定されていましたので、そのタイミングは完璧でした。鮮やかなオレンジと赤の紅葉が、彼らの特別な瞬間を捉えるための完璧な背景となりました。

二人の出会いのストーリー

久野さんがレイナさんと出会たのは2020年6月、当時バンクーバー在住の師匠にメキシコのトゥルム在住の興味深い性女性が名古屋に来ているから会わないか誘われたことがきっかけあった。二人はそこで初めて出会った。最初の出会いの後、久野さんは日本の資本主義構造について考え始めた。彼は疑問を抱き始め、お金をかけずに大阪で暮らすことを決意した。そして彼が大阪で暮らしていると、レイナさんがメキシコからガールフレンドを連れて訪ねてきた。数週間後彼は名古屋に戻り、その際彼の秘書から一緒に住まないかと誘われた。彼はその申し出を快諾し名古屋での新しい生活を始めた。彼自身がデザイナーであり、レイナさんがデザイン会社の経営を行っていたことから、彼女の業務を手伝うようになり、最終的には一緒に暮らし始めた。二人共デジタル旅行者だったので、一緒に旅行したり色んな場所に行ったりすることが多くなった。やがて二人の友情は恋愛関係に変化し、お付き合いが始まった。出会ってから2週間ほどたった頃、二人の家で式を挙げた。その時お互いの頭に「結婚」という言葉がお互いの脳裏に浮かび, 彼は早すぎると思いながらも告白した。レイナさんもまだ早いと思ったのか彼を振った。交際中、レイナさん彼に、“いつかちゃんとプロポーズしてほしい“と言った。その3ヶ月後にグルジアのトビリシに“仕事旅行“”に出かけた二人は、グルジアのコーカサス山脈にある8000ｍのカズベキ山の頂に向かって馬に乗り、雷鳴の轟く満点と夜空の下で、彼はもう一度レイナさんにプロポーズした。

エンゲージメント撮影

私は2日間にわたり、麗菜と久野の婚約セッションの写真撮影を楽しみ、美しい写真の仕上がりに感激しています。まず、日の出前に起きて忠霊塔へドライブし、富士山の山頂に当たる太陽の光を捉えるところから始めました。太陽が顔を出す頃には光が強くなってしまいましたが、それでも最大限に活用しました。カジュアルな写真を撮った後、より親密なショットに移りました。私のお気に入りの一つは、富士山にピントを合わせ、麗菜と久野が前景にぼかした白黒のショットでした。

翌日も早起きして、河口湖での日の出を目指しました。残念ながら、厚い雲に覆われて富士山を見ることはできませんでした。しかし、曇りの天気はかなり良い光が得られ、様々な背景をバックに麗菜と久野の素晴らしい写真を撮ることができました。

私のお気に入りの写真は、彼らがコチアの燃えるような茂みの真ん中に立っているものでした。照明が完璧で、彼らの服装のスタイルと色が写真の夢のような雰囲気を更に盛り上げていました。まるで日本のドラマが現実になったような気分でした。この場所で撮影が終わった後、私達はもみじ回廊へ向かいました。これは、もみじの木で有名な場所です。

秋の鮮やかなオレンジ色と赤の紅葉が見事な光景を作り出します。しかし、ここでカップルのポートレートを撮影することは、同じように写真を撮影している人が沢山いるため、難しいこでした。それにもかかわらず、日本の秋の木々と一緒にカップルのポートレートを撮影できたことに感激しています。麗菜と久野、あなたたちの人生の特別な瞬間を撮らせて頂き、ありがとうございました。
